This is my personal website. I use Google Analytics 4, a service from Google, to see how it is used. This page explains what that involves and how to turn it off.
Analytics is on by default
Analytics runs when you visit this site. I do not ask first, and there is no consent banner. It does not run if you turn it off with the control in the footer, if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, or if your browser or a blocker stops it. The site works the same either way.
What is collected
Google Analytics runs in your browser and sends information to Google. It sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier for my analytics property. The information can include:
- The address of the page you view, without any query string or fragment, and the page title.
- The website that sent you here, as a site name only.
- Which contact button you click, email or WhatsApp, and which part of the page it was on. Not the email address or the phone number.
- Information Google Analytics collects by default when it runs: an online identifier stored in a cookie, browser and device details, language, screen size, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address.
Google Analytics processes online identifiers and device and browser information. Depending on where you live, these can count as personal data. I do not add your name, email address or phone number to analytics events, and this site has no forms. The analytics tag is set up without advertising features.
What is stored on your device
The analytics cookies above. If you turn analytics off, the site also keeps a small note in your browser's local storage so it stays off on your next visit.
Google as the provider
Google provides the analytics service and handles the information it receives. See Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. How long analytics data is kept depends on the settings in my Google Analytics account.
Turning analytics off
Use Turn off analytics in the footer. That stops new collection from your browser and removes the analytics cookies this site can reach. The page reloads so the analytics code stops running. You can turn it back on from the same place.
There are limits. Turning it off does not remove information that was already sent to Google Analytics. Clearing your browser's site data removes cookies and your saved choice too. You can also use a browser that blocks analytics, or Google's browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics.
